Tax Cut Remains in Effect - 12/6/2010 Under the plan announced by President Obama on December 6th, the current individual income tax rates of 10%, 15%, 25% 28%, 33% and 35% would continue in effect through the end of 2012. If enacted, the plan would also reduce the employee's share of social security tax in 2011 by 2% — from 6.2% to 4.2%. Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act - 4/12/2010 On March 18, 2010, President Obama signed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, which contains more than $17 Billion in tax credits aimed to stimulate employment, and includes $20 Billion for highway and transit infrastructure programs. One of the most important provisions for businesses is a tax credit for hiring from the ranks of the unemployed. Under the HIRE Act, the employer of a "qualified employee" is excused from paying the employer match for the 6.2% Social Security portion of that employee's wages in 2010. COBRA Temporary Extension Act of 2010 - 3/15/2010 On March 2, 2010, the U.S. Senate passed H.R. 4691, the Temporary Extension Act of 2010, by a vote of 78-19. The Senate action followed House passage of the measure a few days earlier, and the President immediately signed this bill into law. The Temporary Extension Act extends the COBRA subsidy program that was enacted under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and extends unemployment benefits.
